| The Rickshaw Run is a lot more than just having a great adventure; it's also about raising vital funds for a great cause. Rural India is home to some of the most poverty stricken people in the whole of Asia. We want to help raise money for Mercy Corps who are involved in many grass roots projects in India. These people are the real saints.
The genuine Rickshaw drivers also have a hard life in India. Many have to rent their rickshaws or take out a loan to buy one. It is the norm that the lending rates are extortionate, amounting to a huge percentage of their possible daily earnings. The driver becomes trapped working ridiculous hours to cover the loan or hire and earning barely enough to live off. In addition to the great work that Mercy Corps are doing in India they will be working with the Rickshaw Run organisers to get the Rickshaws from the event to worthy owners, thus freeing a rickshaw driver from the shackles of unrealistic loans and rickshaw rental.
